Enugu State Launches Climate Policy and Action Plan, Unveils Climate Manual for Schools

Enugu State has reinforced its commitment to climate action with the official launch of the Enugu State Climate Policy, Climate Action Plan, and the Climate Education Manual for Schools. The milestone event, held at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu, signifies a major leap towards environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

His Excellency, Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, described climate change as an urgent and existential threat that demands proactive measures. He reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to tackling environmental challenges and announced plans to collaborate with the State House of Assembly on legislation prohibiting indiscriminate tree cutting within the metropolis. In his address, he emphasised that the newly launched policy and action plan will drive sustainable growth, anchored in scientific research and best environmental practices.

The Enugu State Climate Policy is designed as a comprehensive framework to integrate sustainability into all sectors of the economy. It aims to attract green investments, create jobs, and position the state as a leader in Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Special Adviser on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, highlighted Climate Smart Agriculture as a key strategy to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on livelihoods and food security.

A key feature of the event was the unveiling of the Climate Manual for Schools, an initiative made possible through the collaboration of key stakeholders, including the Office of the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah. Ahead of the launch, the University of Bristol and the Society for Planet and Prosperity facilitated a focus group involving Nigerian students and teachers to co-create the manual. Secondary school students in Enugu actively contributed their perspectives, ensuring the manual is both informative and practical for their learning environment.

With over 1,000 copies set for distribution across Enugu State and beyond, the manual is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering climate awareness and action among young people.

She also encouraged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the support they received, stressing that sustainable businesses are built on discipline, consistency, and hard work.
