Enugu State welcomed Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, First Lady of the Federal Republic, on Monday for the South‑East rollout of the Renewed Hope Initiative programmes: the Midwives Support Programme and the Food Outreach Scheme, held at the International Conference Centre
The event, held at the International Conference Centre, marked the South-East and state-level launch of these nationwide interventions. As part of the Midwives Support Programme, 10,000 branded kits, including scrubs and Crocs, were distributed to midwives and nurses across the zone, aimed at boosting morale and recognising the crucial role of healthcare workers in maternal and child health.
This rollout concluded the nationwide distribution of 60,000 kits.
In the same event, the Food Outreach Scheme provided staple food items to hundreds of vulnerable individuals, including older citizens and persons with disabilities. The intervention comes at a time when inflation and hardship have deepened the need for targeted social protection.
Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, First Lady of Enugu State, described the visit as “a significant investment in the people,” praising the First Lady of Nigeria for her clear commitment to human capital development.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah also addressed the gathering, highlighting ongoing reforms in the health sector, including the upgrade of the State School of Nursing to a College of Nursing Sciences with the capacity to graduate over 3,000 nurses annually.
Eight First Ladies from across Nigeria, including Hajiya Nana Shettima, the wife of the Vice President, joined the visit and supported the distribution of relief materials.
Earlier in the day, Senator Tinubu held an engagement with traditional rulers at the Enugu State House of Assembly complex. In that meeting, she called on traditional institutions to champion maternal health, early childhood immunisation, and the elimination of harmful practices in their communities. The royal fathers pledged support for the Renewed Hope Initiative, describing the campaign as a welcome reinforcement of existing community efforts.
