Keynote Address on the International Widows Day 2024.

Distinguished Guests, and Most Importantly, Our Resilient Widows, welcome!!! Today, we are here to commemorate International Widows Day 2024, unified by our commitment to accelerating gender equality. This year’s theme, “Accelerating the Achievement of Gender Equality by Emphasising the Strength of Land and Property Rights for Widows,” holds profound significance.

Widows face unique challenges, often being denied their rightful inheritance of land and property. These injustices not only perpetuate poverty but also hinder our progress toward true gender equality. When widows have secure land and property rights, they gain the foundation to rebuild their lives, support their families, and contribute to their communities. This is not just a matter of fairness but a vital step toward empowering women and ensuring sustainable development for all.

As part of our commitment to supporting you, I am honoured to present a token of financial support to our cherished widows; it is a seed of hope and a tool for empowerment. I encourage you to use it wisely. Consider starting a petty trade at your doorstep or enhancing an existing one. These small-scale businesses can be started with minimal investment and have the potential to grow into stable sources of income.

Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Vegetable and Fruit Selling
  2. Food kiosk
  3. Tailoring and Sewing Services
  4. Hairdressing and Beauty Services
  5. Soap and Detergent Making
  6. Retail Kiosk
  7. Beadwork and Handicrafts

Remember, success in business starts with determination and wise management of resources. Though it may seem challenging, starting small can lead to significant achievements. Have faith in your potential, take that first step, and watch how your efforts can transform into prosperity.

Furthermore, as we continue to work towards securing land and property rights for widows, let us also recognise the importance of these small economic activities. They not only provide financial stability but also boost your confidence and self-worth. You are the backbone of our society; your strength, fortitude, and wisdom are invaluable.

In conclusion, I want to reiterate that you are not alone in this journey. The Government of Enugu State stands with you, and we are committed to creating an environment where every widow can succeed. Use this support wisely and believe in your dreams; together, we will accelerate the achievement of gender equality, ensuring a radiant, more just future for all. Thank you, and God bless you all
