Over 250 Participants Trained as Enugu Hosts The Renewed Hope Initiative Agricultural Support Programme

Enugu played host to the Agricultural Support Programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative on Friday, 16th May, drawing over 250 participants for a full day of practical training and empowerment. Spearheaded by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the programme continues to drive impactful support for individuals working to improve their livelihoods through agriculture.

The Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro‑Industrialisation, Hon. Patrick Ubru, delivered the welcome address, urging participants to make the most of each session. He highlighted the value of capacity-building in advancing food systems and unlocking long-term economic resilience.

Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development praised the Renewed Hope Initiative for its hands-on approach to empowerment. Her remarks were followed by an overview of the programme by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Barr. Chidimma Egeonu, who outlined its structure and goals.

Training sessions were led by seasoned facilitators from the Ministry of Agriculture: Mr Ogbuanya Sunday (cassava farming), Dr (Mrs) Agah (poultry and fishery), Mr Ivo Theophilus (rice farming), and Mr Ezeah Festus (pig farming). The content was tailored to equip participants with relevant, adaptable techniques they could immediately put into use.

Engr. Mike Ogbuekwe, Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, commended the initiative and spoke about ongoing agricultural reforms in Enugu State. He shared updates on the State’s upcoming farm estate project and broader efforts by His Excellency Governor Peter Mbah to expand agribusiness opportunities and strengthen local food systems.

The First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah was ably represented by Mrs Chinyere Ugwu, wife of the Honourable Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly. Addressing the trainees, she remarked:
“We must continue to invest in the right knowledge, empower people, and lay the foundation for a future where food security and financial stability are not out of reach, but within grasp.”

She went on to acknowledge the vision behind the Renewed Hope Initiative:
“I want to thank Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her foresight in championing this initiative. Through her leadership, more Nigerians are gaining access to the tools they need to thrive. Today’s programme is a powerful example of what intentional, people-focused leadership can achieve.”
