Women's progress in focus as Enugu State Celebrates International Women's Day 2025

The Office of the First Lady of Enugu State, in collaboration with the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development and the Custos Care Foundation, hosted the grand finale of the International Women’s Day 2025 commemoration in Enugu. The event brought together women from various sectors across the state to reflect on progress made, celebrate achievements, and renew commitments to advancing women’s rights and empowerment.

The Honourable Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Ngozi Enih, opened the programme with a welcome address, highlighting the need to dismantle barriers hindering women’s progress. She stressed the importance of collective efforts in accelerating gender equality and ensuring women have access to opportunities for growth and development.

The event also featured a session by Mrs Esther Mbah, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, who spoke on the urgent need to curb gender-based violence in communities. She underscored the importance of education, enforcement of protective laws, and community-driven initiatives in addressing this pressing issue.

A major highlight of the day was a cultural performance by the Enugu State Cultural Dance Troupe, which showcased the state’s rich heritage and celebrated the resilience of women. This was followed by an insightful session on women’s health and nutrition by Dr Chizoba, who emphasised the significance of proper nourishment at every stage of a woman’s life.

Speaking on the impact of the Custos Care Foundation, its Managing Director, Comr. Egodi Igwe, detailed the foundation’s ongoing efforts to support maternal and child welfare, healthcare access, education, and social protection. She reiterated the foundation’s commitment to uplifting vulnerable groups across the state.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to gender equality and social development, awards were presented to individuals and organisations championing women's rights, economic empowerment, and healthcare access.

The event also featured a march past by representatives from all 17 local government areas, symbolising unity and a shared commitment to women’s empowerment. This was followed by a lively dancing competition that added to the excitement of the occasion.

Ably represented by Mrs Chinyere Ugwu, Wife of the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, commended the achievements of women across various sectors, including politics, education, business, healthcare, and technology. She acknowledged that while progress had been made, challenges such as gender-based violence, economic discrimination, and limited leadership opportunities persisted. She called for sustained action and collective efforts to break these barriers.
